Buying a used car: questions before the viewing
Prepare a useful shortlist, compare the car with its listing and make time for an independent inspection.
Ask for comparable details
Before travelling, ask for the exact model, year, fuel type, gearbox and mileage. Request recent photographs of the exterior, cabin and any known damage. Ask which maintenance records are available and what work is due. Compare cars with similar specifications; a lower asking price alone does not explain the overall condition.
View the actual car
Meet in daylight and compare the car with the photographs. Ask the owner to explain warning lights, visible repairs and missing equipment. Record anything that could not be checked. A fresh wash, a short drive or an attractive listing is not evidence that the mechanical systems are sound.
Allow an independent inspection
Agree with the seller on an inspection by a mechanic you choose before committing. Ask for a written list of findings and likely repair needs, then compare the total expected cost with other options. Keep the agreed car details and disclosed faults in your conversation; do not treat an inspection as a guarantee.

- Known faults and records were discussed.
- Independent inspection and total cost are planned.
