Buying used white goods: fit, condition and collection
Check the exact appliance, its working condition and the route into your home before agreeing to collect it.
Measure before travelling
Ask for the model label and external dimensions. Measure the space at home, doorways, stairs and any narrow turns. Check the model instructions for required clearances and connections; similar-looking appliances can have different requirements. Include handles and opened doors when assessing space.
Ask to see normal operation
With the seller, observe the appliance operating as intended and inspect visible seals, hinges and exterior damage. Ask about repairs, leaks, unusual noise and missing parts. Do not open electrical housings or improvise a connection. If normal operation cannot be demonstrated, record that uncertainty and arrange a qualified check.
Agree collection and installation
List the accessories and fittings included and agree who handles collection. Follow the manufacturer’s transport and installation instructions for the exact model, including any waiting time or transport fixings. Factor in qualified installation where needed. Photograph the condition at handover so both parties understand what was collected.
