Second-hand furniture: measure the whole journey
Compare furniture by size and condition, then plan collection before deciding that a low price is a good deal.
Check all the measurements
Ask for width, height, depth and any removable sections. Measure your room and the route through entrances, lifts and stairs. Ask whether the item has been dismantled before and whether the necessary fittings remain. A sofa fitting the room does not mean it will fit through the door.
Inspect surfaces and structure
In good light, examine visible joints, upholstery and underside with permission. Ask about stains, odours, loose parts and previous repairs. Check drawers and doors during normal use without forcing them. If photographs omit an important area, request a clear view rather than assuming the condition is consistent everywhere.
Calculate collection costs
Agree the pickup date, who helps move the furniture and whether any dismantling is included. Add transport and expected repair costs to the asking price before comparing alternatives. Keep the agreed included parts in writing, and avoid paying for an item described only by a catalogue photograph.
