Choosing a used city bicycle: fit, route and viewing
Choose a bicycle around your everyday route and check its fit before comparing the asking prices.
Start with the journeys you actually make
Write down the distance, hills, storage space and what you carry. A short flat commute with a bag has different needs from weekend rides on rough tracks. Ask for the bicycle’s model, marked frame size and wheel size before arranging a meeting. These numbers narrow the choice; they do not establish that a particular bicycle will fit you.
Check fit and visible condition together
With the seller’s permission, sit on the bicycle and check whether reaching the bars and controls feels comfortable. Ask to see the tyres, wheels, frame joints, chain and brakes in good light. Do not treat photographs or a short viewing as a safety inspection. If damage or operation is uncertain, arrange an assessment by a bicycle workshop before riding.
Compare the complete purchase
Record what is included: lights, lock, rack, mudguards and any maintenance records. Ask which faults or replacements are already known. Compare two bicycles using the same list, including collection and any workshop work you have been quoted for. Leave unknown costs marked as unknown, and agree how a test ride or independent inspection will be arranged.

- Included accessories, known faults and collection are clear.
