Buying a used acoustic guitar: prepare for the meeting
Compare the instrument’s feel, included accessories and disclosed condition with a short, repeatable viewing plan.
Ask for the model and clear photographs
Confirm whether the guitar has nylon or steel strings and whether any pickup or electronics are included. Ask for photographs of the front, back, neck, headstock and bridge. Get a list of repairs and known problems in the seller’s words. A case in a photograph may be separate from the sale, so confirm it before travelling.
Try the instrument in a quiet place
With permission, hold the guitar seated and check whether its size feels comfortable. Play familiar chords and individual notes at several positions, or bring an experienced player if you are new. Listen for sounds you cannot explain and note where they occur. Do not adjust the neck or change string type during a viewing; unresolved setup or structural concerns need a repair specialist.
Write down the handover details
Record the guitar, case, strap and any electronic accessories separately. If electronics are fitted, ask to try them with suitable equipment; otherwise mark them untested. Compare instruments using the same short tune and questions. Agree collection and packing with the seller, and keep the disclosed repairs and faults in your conversation.
