Buying a used iPhone: a viewing checklist
Confirm the model, inspect everyday functions and settle account ownership before agreeing to buy a used iPhone.
Match the device to the listing
Ask the seller for the precise model and storage capacity before travelling. At the meeting, compare the device information with the listing and check whether the box belongs to the same device. Ask about repairs and which cable, charger or receipt is included. A clean case alone says little about the phone’s history.
Try the functions you will use
With permission, type across the keyboard, take front and rear camera photos, play sound and record a short voice sample. Connect a suitable charger and inspect the port without inserting tools. Compare battery information where available, but also ask about actual use between charges. Record any untested function rather than assuming it works.
Complete the ownership check
Apple advises against buying a device with Activation Lock enabled. The seller should follow the official transfer instructions; do not ask for their password or accept a promise to unlock it later.
