Used laptop inspection: hardware, ports and keyboard
Prepare a laptop viewing around the work you actually do, and compare the device information with the advertised specification.
Confirm the installed hardware
Ask for the complete model code, processor, memory and storage before arranging a viewing. With permission, open the system information on the actual laptop. On Windows, device specifications and storage information are found in separate Settings areas. Compare the installed hardware rather than relying on a generic product sticker. Record any difference from the listing.
Try your everyday connections
Type a sentence using every key you need, then test the trackpad, camera and microphone in an agreed application. Bring a compatible accessory for the ports you depend on. Check Wi-Fi and external-screen output if relevant. Inspect the hinge while opening normally; do not force it or remove the case during a viewing.
Clarify battery and ownership
Ask about normal use away from a charger, previous repairs and included power equipment. A short battery test cannot establish a full working day. Confirm the owner can remove personal data and any organisation management legitimately before handover. If ownership or access restrictions remain unclear, leave that uncertainty unresolved in your decision rather than assuming a reset fixes it.
