RAM and storage in laptop listings: what to compare
Two laptops with the same capacity number may offer very different configurations. Separate memory, drive capacity and upgrade claims.
Read the specification as separate fields
RAM is working memory; storage holds files and installed applications. Ask the seller to state each separately, including drive type where known. Do not interpret “512 GB memory” as an accurate RAM specification. Have ambiguous wording corrected in the conversation and compare it with the device information at the viewing.
Check the requirements of your work
List the applications, typical documents and files you plan to keep locally. Check the current requirements published by those application makers. A higher capacity alone does not establish speed: processor, drive, cooling and software also matter. Ask for a permitted demonstration of your normal task instead of judging a laptop by one specification.
Verify upgradeability for the exact model
Do not assume memory or a drive is replaceable because another laptop in the same series supports it. Find the exact model’s service documentation or ask a qualified repairer. Include compatible parts and labour in your budget. If the seller cannot establish an upgrade claim, evaluate the laptop in its current configuration.
