Buying used physical games: edition, disc and codes
Compare the actual disc or cartridge and its edition, and treat downloadable extras separately from the physical game.
Match the game to your device
Confirm the platform, edition and any stated region or language information using the publisher’s documentation. Similar cover art does not prove compatibility. Ask whether the pictured item is the actual disc or cartridge being sold, and whether a compatible disc drive is required. Verify any upgrade claim for the exact edition rather than assuming it applies to every copy.
Inspect and demonstrate the physical copy
Inspect the surface, label and case without applying cleaning chemicals. Ask the owner to demonstrate recognition and launch on a compatible device where possible. Starting a title does not test every later part of the game. Discuss any installation, update or online requirement before the meeting if your connection is limited.
Separate codes from guaranteed contents
A printed download code may already have been used or may carry restrictions. Do not count an unverified code, subscription or seller account as a confirmed part of the bundle. Write down the physical items included and which extras remain unverified. Avoid redeeming a code during a casual inspection without an explicit agreement, because redemption can change its availability.
